Possible Causes

Sticking governor linkage, Faulty electronic governor actuator, Incorrect governor spring adjustment, Defective engine speed sensor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF the generator, disconnect the battery, and wait for all moving parts to stop before inspecting the governor system.

  • Inspect mechanical linkage: Check the governor arm, springs, and linkage rods for binding, corrosion, or interference with wiring or covers. Clean and lubricate pivot points lightly if allowed by the manual.
  • Check governor actuator (if electronic): On models with an electronic actuator, inspect the actuator for loose mounting or damaged wiring. Ensure the actuator lever moves smoothly through its range.
  • Verify spring settings: Compare the governor spring attachment points to the DuroStar service diagram. If someone has altered them, restore to factory positions.
  • Test speed sensor: Inspect the magnetic pickup or crankshaft speed sensor for metal debris on the tip and correct air gap. Clean and adjust as needed. Replace if the sensor shows intermittent output.
  • Run test with frequency meter: Start the generator with no load and monitor frequency. If it spikes above normal before shutdown, stop the unit and avoid further operation until a technician can properly adjust the governor and verify overspeed protection.
