Possible Causes
Low engine oil causing bearing wear, Connecting rod or piston damage, Loose flywheel, Excessive valve clearance
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Immediately shut down the generator and disconnect the battery. Do not restart until the cause is identified.
- Check oil level: Verify oil level and top up if low. If oil is very low or contaminated with metal, internal damage is likely.
- Inspect flywheel: Remove the flywheel cover and check that the flywheel nut is tight and the key is intact. Tighten to specification if loose.
- Listen while cranking: Gently crank the engine by hand (spark disabled) to feel for binding or clunks. Any severe mechanical noise indicates internal damage.
- Do not run under load: Operating with internal knock can cause catastrophic failure. Contact a qualified engine technician for teardown and repair.
