Possible Causes
Insufficient oil added during last service, External oil leak at filter or drain plug, Faulty low oil level float switch, Generator installed on unlevel pad causing false low reading
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Ensure generator is OFF and cannot start automatically. Allow engine to cool before checking oil.
Steps:
- Verify level on dipstick: Pull the dipstick, wipe, reinsert fully, and check level. Add the correct oil type in small increments until it reaches the FULL mark. Do not overfill.
- Check for leaks: Inspect under the engine, around the oil filter, and at the drain plug for fresh oil. Tighten components as needed and replace any damaged seals.
- Check mounting level: Confirm the generator base is level. If the unit is significantly tilted, the low oil level switch may trip early. Correct pad or shimming issues if necessary.
- Inspect low oil level switch: Locate the float-type low oil level switch on the crankcase (if equipped). Check wiring for damage and secure connections. If the oil level is correct but the alarm persists, the switch may be stuck or failed and should be replaced.
- Clear alarm: After correcting the issue, clear the alarm on the Eaton controller and run a test cycle.
