Possible Causes
No fuel supply or low gas pressure to the engine, Closed manual gas shutoff valve at meter or generator, Faulty ignition coil or spark plug, Clogged fuel regulator or carburetor on the Eaton generator engine
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Place generator in OFF mode and disable automatic operation. Avoid repeated cranking to prevent starter damage and gas buildup.
Steps:
- Verify fuel supply: Confirm that the gas utility is active and that any manual shutoff valves between the meter and generator are fully open. For LP systems, check tank level and that the tank valve is open.
- Check gas pressure (basic): Listen and smell near the regulator for obvious leaks (do not use open flame). Use a manometer if available to verify inlet pressure meets Eaton/engine specifications. Low pressure requires a gas contractor.
- Inspect ignition components: Remove a spark plug wire and check for secure connection. Remove a spark plug and inspect for heavy fouling or wear; replace plugs with the specified type if needed.
- Check air filter: Remove the air filter cover and inspect the filter element. Replace if heavily clogged, as this can cause rich mixture and hard starting.
- Reset and test: After addressing fuel and ignition basics, clear the Overcrank alarm and attempt a manual start. If the engine still will not fire, further diagnosis of the fuel regulator and control board is recommended by a technician.
