Generator shuts down after running under heavy load, display shows E05 (over‑temperature)
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the generator and allow it to cool for at least 30 minutes. Do not open any covers while hot.
- Inspect cooling air paths: Remove any debris, leaves, or dust from the recoil starter area, flywheel cover, and cooling air intake grilles. Ensure the generator is installed with adequate clearance on all sides as specified by Einhell.
- Check ventilation in enclosure: For standby units installed in a housing, verify that the ventilation louvers and exhaust outlet are not blocked. Ensure the exhaust is routed correctly and not recirculating hot air back into the intake.
- Verify oil level: Check and top up engine oil to the correct level. Low oil can increase operating temperature.
- Reduce load: When restarting, limit the connected load to 70–80% of the generator's continuous rating. Avoid starting large inductive loads (e.g., compressors, pumps) simultaneously.
- Check temperature sensor wiring: Locate the cylinder head temperature sensor or thermistor on the engine. Inspect its wiring for damage or loose connectors. Reseat the connector and ensure it is firmly attached to the head.
If E05 recurs with clean airflow and moderate load, the temperature sensor or control module may be faulty and should be tested and replaced by an authorized Einhell technician.
