Possible Causes
Low coolant level in radiator, Failed engine coolant thermostat, Faulty radiator fan or fan belt, Blocked radiator core or restricted airflow in enclosure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Allow the generator to cool completely (at least 30–45 minutes). Do not open the radiator cap while hot. Isolate battery negative and ensure AUTO mode is disabled.
- Check coolant level: Remove the radiator cap slowly when cool. Coolant should be near the filler neck. Top up with the correct coolant mix recommended by FG Wilson/engine manufacturer. Inspect the expansion bottle level if fitted.
- Inspect for coolant leaks: Check radiator core, hoses, water pump area, and cylinder head gasket area for dried coolant stains or wet spots.
- Check fan belt: On Perkins or other engines, inspect the drive belt for cracks, glazing, or slack. Press midway between pulleys; excessive deflection indicates the belt needs tensioning or replacement.
- Verify radiator fan operation and airflow: Ensure nothing is obstructing the air intake or discharge louvers of the acoustic enclosure. Clean debris from the radiator fins using low-pressure air from the engine side outwards.
- Thermostat check (basic): If the engine overheats quickly from cold, the thermostat may be stuck closed. This usually requires removal from the housing and testing in hot water; if you are not experienced, contact a technician.
- Reset and test: After correcting issues, clear the alarm on the controller, run in MANUAL with no load, and monitor temperature. Then apply load gradually while watching the temperature reading.
