Possible Causes
Blocked alternator ventilation, Overload operation, High ambient temperature with inadequate cooling, Faulty temperature sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Stop the generator and allow the alternator to cool. Isolate battery negative before opening covers.
- Inspect ventilation: Check that alternator air inlets and outlets are not blocked by debris or insulation.
- Check load history: Review recent load levels; continuous operation near or above rated kVA can overheat the alternator.
- Inspect temperature sensor wiring: Locate the stator RTD or thermistor leads in the terminal box and check for damage or loose connections.
- Reduce load: If the application allows, reduce the continuous load to within 80–90% of rated capacity.
- Professional testing: If overheating persists, have the alternator tested for internal faults or partial shorted turns.
