Safety first: Turn OFF the generator, disconnect battery negative, and ensure ATS is in NORMAL/UTILITY.
- Check main breaker: Verify the Firman generator main breaker is in the ON position. Reset if tripped.
- Inspect output lugs: Open the output terminal box and confirm all cables are securely attached and not burned.
- Test AVR: With a meter and proper precautions, a technician can check excitation voltage from the AVR. If excitation is absent and wiring is intact, replace the AVR.
- Check stator continuity: Using an ohmmeter with the generator off-line, measure resistance between stator leads. An open circuit indicates a failed winding requiring professional rewinding or alternator replacement.
