Possible Causes

Failed GE transfer switch control board, Stuck or burned transfer contactor, Open control wiring between generator and ATS, Blown ATS control fuse

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety First: Working inside an automatic transfer switch involves lethal voltages. If you are not experienced, contact a licensed electrician. Always turn OFF utility and generator breakers before opening the ATS.

  • 1. Verify generator output: Confirm the generator is producing correct voltage and frequency at its terminals with a multimeter.
  • 2. Check ATS control fuse: Open the GE transfer switch enclosure and locate the low-voltage control fuse. Replace if blown with the same rating.
  • 3. Inspect control wiring: Trace the low-voltage control cable between the generator control board and the ATS. Ensure all terminal screws are tight and no wires are broken.
  • 4. Listen for contactor operation: During a simulated outage, listen for the ATS contactor to move. If it hums but does not move, the contactor may be mechanically stuck or burned.
  • 5. Manual transfer test (if equipped): Some GE ATS units have a manual transfer mechanism. With both power sources OFF, attempt a manual transfer to verify the contactor can move. If it binds, the switch mechanism may need replacement.
  • 6. Do not bypass safety interlocks: Never force the ATS or jumper controls to make it transfer; this can create dangerous backfeed conditions.
