Possible Causes

Low coolant level (liquid-cooled models), Blocked radiator or cooling fins, Failed cooling fan or fan belt, Faulty temperature sensor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety First: Do not open the radiator cap on a hot engine. Turn the controller to OFF and allow the unit to cool completely before servicing.

  • 1. Inspect airflow: Check that the generator enclosure louvers and intake/exhaust openings are not blocked by debris, snow, or vegetation. Clear any obstructions.
  • 2. Check coolant level (liquid-cooled): After cooling, remove the radiator cap and verify coolant is at the proper level. Top off with the correct coolant mixture if low. Inspect hoses for leaks.
  • 3. Inspect fan and belt: Confirm the radiator fan spins freely and the belt is intact and properly tensioned. Replace a broken or slipping belt.
  • 4. Clean radiator or cooling fins: Use low-pressure compressed air or a soft brush to remove dirt and bugs from the radiator core or air-cooled engine fins. Do not bend fins.
  • 5. Check temperature sensor wiring: Locate the engine temperature sender and verify the connector is secure and wiring is undamaged. A shorted sensor can cause false high-temp alarms.
  • 6. Clear alarm and test: After corrections, cycle the controller OFF then AUTO to clear the High Temp alarm and run a short manual test while monitoring temperature. Persistent overheating requires professional diagnosis.
