Possible Causes
Empty or low LP/NG fuel supply, Closed or partially closed gas shutoff valve, Faulty ignition coil or spark plug, Low engine compression or mechanical engine failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Place the generator in OFF mode at the controller and turn OFF the utility and generator breakers before working. Allow the unit to cool and shut off gas supply if you smell gas. If you suspect a gas leak, stop and call a licensed gas technician.
- 1. Verify fuel supply: Confirm the LP tank is not empty or that NG service is active. Open the GE standby generator gas shutoff valve fully. Check for any external gas shutoff valves that may be closed.
- 2. Inspect spark plug: Remove the spark plug boot, then the spark plug. Check for heavy carbon, oil fouling, or a cracked insulator. Clean with a wire brush and set the gap to the engine spec (typically around 0.025–0.030 in). Replace if worn or damaged.
- 3. Check ignition coil connection: Inspect the ignition coil lead to the spark plug for secure connection and no cracks. Ensure the coil wiring harness is firmly seated on the engine and at the control board.
- 4. Confirm choke and throttle movement: With the unit OFF, manually move the choke and throttle linkages on the GE engine. They should move freely without binding. If they are stuck, clean and lubricate lightly and ensure the governor linkage is not bent.
- 5. Clear the Overcrank fault: After correcting issues, place the controller to OFF, then back to AUTO to clear the Overcrank alarm. Initiate a manual test start. If the unit still fails to start, further diagnosis of fuel pressure and engine compression is required by a technician.
