Possible Causes
Failed voltage regulator (AVR), Misadjusted voltage trim on control board, Loose or damaged sensing wires from stator to controller, Defective GE control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF the generator and utility breakers before opening any electrical compartment. Only work inside the control panel if you are comfortable with live-voltage diagnostics; otherwise contact a licensed technician.
- 1. Verify load is disconnected: Ensure the main generator breaker is OFF so no loads are connected while troubleshooting.
- 2. Inspect stator sensing leads: Open the control panel and locate the voltage sensing wires from the alternator stator to the GE controller. Check for loose terminals, burnt connectors, or damaged insulation. Repair or replace as needed.
- 3. Check AVR connections: Locate the Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) module in the alternator housing or control panel. Confirm all plug-in connectors are fully seated and not corroded.
- 4. Measure output voltage: With a multimeter rated for 240 V AC, and with the generator running and breaker OFF, measure line-to-line and line-to-neutral voltages. If readings are significantly above nominal (e.g., >260 V line-to-line on a 240 V system), the AVR is likely defective or misadjusted.
- 5. Replace AVR if necessary: If wiring is intact and voltage remains high, replace the GE-compatible AVR with the correct part number. After replacement, verify voltage is within spec and clear the Overvoltage alarm by cycling the controller from OFF to AUTO.
