Possible Causes
Failed automatic voltage regulator, Open field winding, Broken alternator output leads, Tripped or failed generator main breaker
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF the generator and utility breakers before opening electrical compartments. Use a properly rated multimeter.
- 1. Check generator main breaker: Ensure the breaker on the GE generator is in the ON position and has not tripped. Reset if necessary.
- 2. Measure voltage at generator lugs: With the generator running and breaker ON, carefully measure voltage at the output lugs. If zero, suspect alternator or AVR issues.
- 3. Inspect alternator wiring: Open the alternator terminal box and verify all connections are tight and not burned.
- 4. Examine AVR connections: Ensure the AVR module is securely connected and not visibly damaged. Replace with a GE-compatible AVR if suspected faulty.
- 5. If no excitation is present: Field flashing or alternator repair may be required and should be performed by a generator technician.
