Safety: Wear eye protection and gloves. Battery acid is corrosive.

- Protect terminals: After reassembly (positive first, then negative), apply a thin coat of dielectric grease or battery terminal spray.
- Inspect tray: Clean and repaint or replace a heavily corroded battery tray.
- Test battery: Load-test the battery and replace if weak or older than recommended service life.
