Possible Causes
Low engine oil level, Faulty oil pressure switch, Oil pump failure, Wrong oil viscosity causing low pressure when hot
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn the generator OFF and allow the engine to cool. Do not run the engine with suspected low oil pressure; severe damage can occur.
- Check oil level: Remove the dipstick and verify oil level is between the marks. Top up with the correct Generac-recommended oil type and viscosity for your ambient temperature.
- Inspect for leaks: Look around the oil filter, drain plug, and crankcase gasket for signs of oil leakage. Tighten the oil filter and drain plug if needed. Replace damaged gaskets or seals.
- Test oil pressure switch: Locate the oil pressure switch on the engine block. Disconnect the wire and temporarily jumper it to engine ground to simulate good pressure (for testing only). If the unit now runs normally and mechanical pressure is confirmed with a gauge, replace the oil pressure switch.
- Verify actual oil pressure: If possible, install a mechanical oil pressure gauge in place of the switch and run the engine briefly. If pressure is truly low, shut down immediately and have the engine inspected by a professional for oil pump or bearing issues.
