Possible Causes
Failed battery charger regulator, Incorrect charger voltage setting, Shorted battery cell causing abnormal readings
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF AC power feeding the battery charger (usually from the service panel), then turn OFF the generator and disconnect battery negative. Overcharging can cause battery venting; ensure good ventilation.
Steps:
- Measure charger output: With AC power restored to the charger but engine off, measure DC voltage at the battery terminals. Anything consistently above ~14.5 V on a 12 V system indicates overcharge.
- Inspect charger: Locate the Gillette-supplied battery charger module inside the control panel or on the skid. Check for burned components or melted wiring. If the charger is adjustable, verify it is set to the correct battery type and voltage.
- Replace charger if faulty: If output is too high and not adjustable, replace the charger with an OEM-equivalent unit rated for the generator.
- Check battery condition: After correcting charger output, test the battery with a load tester. Replace if it fails, as damaged batteries can behave unpredictably.
