Possible Causes
Fuel tank level below pickup, Faulty fuel level sender, Clogged fuel filter, Air in fuel line
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the generator, disconnect battery negative, and keep all ignition sources away from fuel components.
Steps:
- Verify actual fuel level: Check the main fuel tank gauge (diesel or gasoline) or LP/NG supply pressure gauge. Ensure the tank is above the minimum level recommended by Gillette for standby operation.
- Inspect fuel lines: Follow the fuel line from the tank to the engine-mounted fuel filter on the Gillette generator skid. Look for kinks, crushed sections, or wet spots indicating leaks. Repair or replace damaged sections.
- Replace fuel filter: Locate the primary and/or secondary fuel filter(s). Close any fuel shutoff valve, remove the old filter, fill the new filter with clean fuel (diesel/gasoline as appropriate), install, and bleed air per engine manufacturer instructions.
- Check fuel level sender: If the tank is full but the controller still shows LOW FUEL, inspect the wiring to the fuel level sender at the tank. Clean corroded terminals and verify resistance changes with fuel level. Replace the sender if defective.
- LP/NG systems: For gaseous-fueled Gillette sets, verify that the gas supply valve is fully open and that inlet pressure meets the nameplate requirement. Low gas pressure can mimic a low fuel condition.
