How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn the generator OFF, disconnect the battery negative cable, and ensure the unit cannot start automatically. Allow the engine to cool fully before working on it.
Step-by-step:
- Check oil level: Remove the service panel on your Gillette standby generator enclosure. Pull the dipstick, wipe, reinsert, and check again. Top up with the manufacturer-specified oil grade (commonly 10W-30 or as listed on the engine decal) to the FULL mark. Do not overfill.
- Inspect for leaks: Look around the oil filter, oil drain plug, oil cooler (if equipped), and crankcase gasket areas for wet oil. Tighten the oil drain plug and oil filter by hand plus 1/4 turn if seeping is observed. Replace damaged gaskets or seals.
- Reset and test: Reconnect the battery, clear the alarm on the Gillette controller (usually by pressing STOP/RESET), then start the generator and observe the oil pressure reading or indicator. If the alarm returns immediately, shut down.
- Check oil pressure switch/sender: Locate the oil pressure switch or sender on the engine block (often near the oil filter). Inspect the wiring harness and connector for corrosion, loose pins, or damaged insulation. Clean contacts and reseat the connector. If you have a mechanical gauge, temporarily install it in place of the sender to verify actual oil pressure.
- If pressure is truly low: Do not continue to run the engine. Internal wear, a failing oil pump, or a clogged pickup screen may be present. This requires a professional generator technician or engine specialist.
Do not bypass the oil pressure switch for testing except briefly and only if you are qualified; running with no oil pressure can destroy the engine.
