Possible Causes
Dead battery, Faulty starter motor or solenoid, Open start relay on control board, Loose battery or starter cables
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Ensure the generator is in OFF and the main breaker is open. Remove jewelry when working near the starter.
- Check battery voltage: Measure battery voltage; recharge or replace if below 12.0 V.
- Inspect battery and starter cables: Tighten all cable connections at the battery, starter solenoid, and engine ground. Clean corrosion.
- Listen for solenoid click: During a start attempt, listen for a click at the starter. No click may indicate a failed start relay or solenoid.
- Tap test: Lightly tap the starter motor body with a non-metallic tool while attempting to start. If it suddenly engages, the starter is failing and should be replaced.
- Control board relay: If the starter never receives power, the start relay on the Guardian control board may be defective and require board replacement by a technician.
