Possible Causes

Blocked cooling air intake or discharge, Heavy dirt or grass on engine cooling fins, Failed engine cooling fan, Operating in confined or poorly ventilated area

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn the controller to OFF, open the main breaker, and allow the unit to cool. Do not run with covers removed except for brief testing.

  • Inspect air inlets and outlets: Ensure the Guardian enclosure louvers and intake screens are not blocked by snow, leaves, or debris. Clear any obstructions.
  • Clean engine cooling fins: Remove the top cover per the service manual. Use compressed air to blow dirt and grass from the cylinder head and stator cooling fins. Avoid bending fins.
  • Check cooling fan: Verify the flywheel fan or auxiliary cooling fan is intact and securely attached. Replace if blades are broken or missing.
  • Verify clearance: Ensure the generator has the minimum clearance from walls and vegetation specified by Guardian to allow proper airflow.
  • Reset and test: After cleaning, reset the alarm and run the unit under moderate load. If HIGH OIL TEMP returns, have a technician inspect for internal engine issues.
