Possible Causes
Empty or low LP/NG fuel supply, Blocked fuel regulator or fuel line, Failed ignition coil, Faulty spark plug
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Place the generator in OFF mode at the controller and open the main AC breaker to the house. Shut off the fuel supply at the service valve before touching fuel components. Allow the engine to cool completely.
- Check fuel supply: Verify LP tank level or NG gas pressure. Ensure the tank is not empty and that the gas shutoff valve to the Guardian standby generator is fully open.
- Inspect fuel line and regulator: Look for kinks, ice, or damage in the flexible fuel hose and piping. Make sure the Guardian fuel regulator vent is not blocked by debris, insects, or snow.
- Check spark plug: Remove the spark plug, inspect for heavy carbon, oil fouling, or cracked porcelain. Clean or replace with the exact Guardian-specified plug and set the correct gap.
- Inspect ignition coil: Check the ignition coil wiring harness for loose or corroded connectors. If there is no spark when cranking, the ignition coil module may be defective and should be replaced.
- Reset and test: Restore fuel, turn the controller to AUTO, close the enclosure, and perform a manual test start. If OVERCRANK returns, contact a qualified Guardian service technician.
