Possible Causes

Failed automatic voltage regulator (AVR), Loose stator winding connections, Shorted stator winding, Defective voltage sensing circuit in controller

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF the generator, open the main breaker to isolate from the building, and disconnect battery negative. High voltages are present; use extreme caution.

  • Inspect main alternator connections: Remove the alternator terminal cover and visually inspect the stator output leads and neutral connections. Tighten any loose lugs and look for signs of overheating or discoloration.
  • Check AVR connections: Locate the AVR module (often mounted inside the alternator housing or control box). Ensure all plug connectors are fully seated and free of corrosion. Look for burnt components on the AVR board.
  • Measure output (qualified persons only): With the unit reassembled and under no load, start the generator and measure line-to-line voltage at the generator output terminals. If voltage is significantly below nominal (e.g., 120/240 V system reading 60–80 V), the AVR or stator may be faulty.
  • Replace AVR if indicated: If stator windings test good for continuity and insulation resistance, replace the AVR with a Honda-specified AVR for your model.
  • Do not operate with low voltage: Running loads on low voltage can damage appliances. If you cannot restore proper voltage, leave the generator off and call a professional.
