Possible Causes
Failed AVR, Open field winding, Tripped or failed main breaker, Broken rotor or stator connections
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Ensure the generator is shut down, main breaker open, and battery negative disconnected. High voltages may be present when running; only qualified persons should test live circuits.
- Check main breaker: Confirm that the generator's main breaker is not tripped. Reset if necessary. If it trips immediately on start, investigate for shorts.
- Inspect alternator wiring: Remove the alternator terminal cover and check for broken or disconnected stator leads.
- Test AVR: If safe and qualified, measure field voltage from the AVR to the rotor while cranking or running. No field voltage suggests a failed AVR or open field circuit.
- Field flashing (advanced): Some alternators may require field flashing if residual magnetism is lost. This should only be done by a technician following Honda's procedure.
- Professional repair: Open windings or rotor faults require alternator disassembly and are not DIY-friendly.
