Possible Causes
Partially closed gas shutoff valve, Clogged fuel filter or debris in fuel inlet, Failing LP/NG regulator, Excessive demand from other gas appliances on same line
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn the generator OFF and open the main breaker to the generator. Shut off gas before disconnecting any fittings. Work with a licensed gas technician when in doubt.
Steps:
- Verify valves: Confirm all manual gas shutoff valves between the meter/tank and the generator are fully open.
- Check for competing loads: If other large gas appliances (furnace, pool heater, etc.) are running, turn them off and see if the generator can start and run. If it does, the gas system may be undersized.
- Inspect fuel filter and inlet: Locate the fuel inlet screen or filter at the generator. Shut off gas, remove the fitting, and inspect for rust, oil, or debris. Clean or replace as needed.
- Examine regulator: Inspect the Honeywell fuel regulator for signs of failure (leaking, frost, whistling, or erratic operation). Replace if suspect.
- Reset and test: Restore gas, leak-test all joints with a soap solution, then clear the alarm on the controller and run a manual test under load.
