Possible Causes
Undersized gas line to generator, Blocked gas line or debris in gas piping, Maladjusted Honeywell fuel regulator, Low supply pressure from utility or LP tank regulator
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Only qualified persons should open gas lines. Shut off gas at the main shutoff valve and isolate electrical power before service.
Diagnostic steps:
- Check gas line sizing: Compare the installed gas pipe size and length to the Honeywell standby generator installation manual. Long runs or small diameter pipe can cause low pressure under load.
- Inspect external regulators: Verify the primary LP or NG regulator at the tank or meter is set to the correct outlet pressure for the generator. Look for frost, damage, or signs of water intrusion.
- Check generator-mounted regulator: Inspect the Honeywell/Generac-style secondary regulator on the generator for clogged vent, corrosion, or physical damage. Ensure the vent is not blocked by insects or debris.
- Measure pressure (pro level): Using a manometer at the generator inlet test port, verify that pressure during crank meets the spec in the service manual. If pressure drops excessively, the issue is upstream (gas supply or piping).
- Corrective action: Clear any blockages, replace a faulty regulator, or have a gas fitter upsize the gas line. After corrections, clear the Overcrank alarm and retest.
