Possible Causes

Failed RPM sensor, Broken RPM sensor wiring, Loose flywheel magnet or damaged tone wheel, Controller input fault

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF the generator, disconnect battery negative, and allow moving parts to stop before accessing the flywheel area.

Steps:

  • Locate RPM sensor: On many Honeywell units, the RPM sensor is mounted near the flywheel or crankshaft. Inspect its mounting and ensure it is properly aligned and not contacting moving parts.
  • Check wiring: Follow the sensor harness to the controller. Look for cuts, abrasions, or loose connectors. Repair or replace damaged wiring.
  • Clean sensor tip: Remove the sensor and wipe off any metal shavings or debris from the tip. Reinstall with the correct air gap per the service manual.
  • Controller reset: Reconnect battery, clear the RPM Sense Loss alarm, and attempt a start. If the fault persists, the sensor or controller input may be defective.
  • Replace sensor: Install a new OEM RPM sensor if cleaning and wiring checks do not resolve the issue.
