Possible Causes
Failed starter motor, Defective starter solenoid, Loose battery or starter cables, Faulty starter relay on control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the generator and disconnect battery negative. Ensure the engine cannot start unexpectedly.
Steps:
- Check battery and cables: Verify battery voltage and inspect positive and negative cables for corrosion, broken strands, or loose lugs. Repair or replace as needed.
- Listen for solenoid click: With the battery connected and attempting a start, listen for a click at the starter solenoid. No click suggests a control or solenoid issue; a click with no crank suggests a bad starter motor or poor connection.
- Inspect starter connections: Tighten the large cable at the starter motor and solenoid. Look for heat damage.
- Relay check: On some Honeywell models, a starter relay on the control board drives the solenoid. Inspect the board for burnt spots and test the relay if equipped.
- Replace faulty component: Replace the starter motor or solenoid with the correct Honeywell/engine OEM part if they fail basic tests.
