Possible Causes

Faulty crankshaft position sensor (RPM sensor), Damaged sensor wiring harness, Excessive gap between sensor and flywheel, Metal debris on magnetic sensor tip

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF the generator, disconnect battery negative, and ensure the engine cannot start while you are working near rotating parts.

  • Access the sensor: On Hyundai standby engines, the crankshaft position (RPM) sensor is typically mounted near the flywheel housing. Remove any covers as needed.
  • Inspect connector and wiring: Check for chafed wires, loose plugs, or oil contamination at the sensor connector. Clean and reseat the connector.
  • Clean sensor tip: Remove the sensor carefully and wipe the magnetic tip to remove metal filings or debris. Do not scratch the surface.
  • Check sensor gap: Reinstall the sensor and ensure the air gap to the flywheel teeth is within the specification in the Hyundai service manual (commonly around 0.5–1.0 mm). Adjust if the sensor is adjustable.
  • Replace sensor if needed: If E05 persists, replace the crankshaft position sensor with a Hyundai-compatible part. Clear the code and retest.
