Possible Causes

Blocked exhaust system, Overload causing excessive exhaust temperature, Faulty exhaust temperature sensor, Restricted air intake

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF the generator, disconnect battery negative, and allow exhaust components to cool completely before touching.

  • Inspect exhaust outlet: Ensure the Hyundai generator exhaust outlet and silencer are not blocked by nests, debris, or snow/ice. Clear any obstructions.
  • Check air intake: Remove and inspect the air filter element. Replace if dirty or clogged. Ensure intake louvers are clear.
  • Reduce load: Confirm that the connected load does not exceed the generator's continuous rating. Persistent overloading can raise exhaust temperature.
  • Sensor check: Locate the exhaust temperature sensor on the exhaust manifold or outlet. Inspect wiring and connector. If E12 appears on a cold engine or immediately at start, the sensor may be faulty and should be replaced.
  • Professional inspection: If high exhaust temperature persists, have a technician check turbocharger (if fitted), injection timing, and fuel quality.
