Possible Causes
Faulty engine speed sensor (magnetic pickup), Sticking or misadjusted governor, Throttle linkage binding, Controller speed calibration error
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the generator, disconnect battery negative, and lock out automatic start. Do not run the unit with overspeed protection bypassed.
- Step 1 – Inspect throttle and governor linkage: With engine off, move the throttle lever by hand. It should move smoothly from idle to full without sticking. Lubricate pivot points lightly and ensure no cables or debris interfere.
- Step 2 – Check engine speed sensor: Locate the magnetic pickup sensor near the flywheel or ring gear. Inspect the wiring harness for chafing or loose connectors. Remove the sensor and clean metal filings from the tip. Reinstall with the correct air gap per Kipor specifications.
- Step 3 – Verify controller settings: Access the Kipor digital controller menu (refer to model manual) and confirm rated frequency and speed parameters are correct (e.g., 50/60 Hz). Do not change advanced parameters unless you understand their function.
- Step 4 – Test under no‑load: Start the generator with all loads disconnected. If E04 reappears immediately, the speed sensor or controller is likely faulty. Replace the speed sensor first; if the issue persists, consult a technician to test the controller.
