Possible Causes

Failed AVR, Open field winding, Broken excitation wire, Tripped or failed main breaker

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: High voltage is present even without load. Turn OFF the generator and lock out before opening covers.

  • Step 1 – Check main breaker: Ensure the generator's main output breaker is in the ON position and not tripped. Reset if necessary.
  • Step 2 – Measure voltage at terminals: With the unit running (qualified personnel only), measure AC voltage at the alternator terminals. If zero, suspect excitation issues.
  • Step 3 – Inspect AVR and wiring: With power off, open the alternator terminal box, inspect the AVR and its wiring for burns or loose connections. Replace the AVR if visibly damaged or if excitation voltage is absent.
  • Step 4 – Check field winding continuity: Measure resistance of the rotor field winding via slip rings. An open circuit indicates a failed rotor requiring replacement or rewind.
