Possible Causes
Insufficient engine oil, Blocked oil cooler, Failed oil cooler thermostat (if equipped), Excessive engine load or poor ventilation in generator room
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Stop the generator, open the output breaker, disconnect battery negative, and allow the engine to cool.
- Check oil level: Verify oil level with the dipstick and top up with the recommended oil if low.
- Inspect ventilation: Ensure air intake and discharge openings in the Kohler-SDMO canopy or room are not blocked. Remove obstructions and clean dust buildup.
- Check oil cooler: Inspect the external oil cooler (if fitted) for blocked fins or oil leaks. Clean fins with low-pressure air and repair leaks.
- Sensor and wiring: Locate the oil temperature sensor on the engine block or oil gallery. Check wiring and connector for damage. Replace the sensor if readings are clearly abnormal.
- Reset and test: Clear AL10 and run the generator under moderate load while monitoring oil and coolant temperatures.
Persistent high oil temperature may indicate internal engine issues; consult a qualified technician.
