Controller displays “High Battery Voltage” or “Battery Overvoltage”; battery may feel warm or venting.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn generator OFF, open main breaker, and disconnect AC power feeding the charger if separate. Wear eye and hand protection.
- Measure voltage: With a multimeter, measure battery voltage with charger connected. Anything consistently above ~14.5 V on a 12 V system indicates overcharging.
- Inspect charger: Locate the Kohler battery charger (often mounted in the control compartment). Check for burnt smell, discoloration, or swollen components. Replace if damaged.
- Check connections: Ensure battery terminals and charger leads are tight and clean. Loose connections can cause incorrect voltage sensing.
- Test with another battery: If possible, connect a known-good battery and observe charging voltage. If overvoltage persists, replace the charger. If voltage normalizes, the original battery is likely defective.
Do not continue to operate with a known overcharging condition, as it can cause battery failure or explosion. Replace the charger with a Kohler-approved unit if faulty.
