Possible Causes

Blocked air intake or exhaust (air-cooled), Low coolant or coolant circulation issue (liquid-cooled), Failed cooling fan or fan belt, Dirty radiator or cooling fins

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn generator OFF, open main breaker, disconnect battery negative, and allow the unit to cool completely before touching engine or exhaust components.

  • Air-cooled units: Check that louvers and intake/exhaust openings on the Kohler enclosure are not blocked by debris, snow, or vegetation. Clear any obstructions.
  • Cooling fins: Remove panels and inspect cylinder head and block cooling fins. Blow out dirt and debris with compressed air, taking care not to damage wiring.
  • Liquid-cooled units: Check coolant level in the expansion tank and radiator. Top up with correct coolant mix if low. Inspect radiator for dirt and bugs; clean with low-pressure water from the back side.
  • Fan and belt: Verify that the cooling fan spins freely and that the belt (if used) is intact and properly tensioned. Replace worn or broken belts.
  • Temperature sensor: Inspect the engine coolant temperature sensor or cylinder head temp sensor connector for corrosion or loose fit.

If overheating recurs after basic cleaning and fluid checks, have a technician evaluate the water pump, thermostat, and internal cooling passages.
