Controller displays “Loss of Sensing” or “Voltage Sense Loss”; generator may run but not transfer load.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn generator OFF, open main breaker, and disconnect battery negative. Verify utility power is off at the transfer switch before opening covers.
- Inspect sensing leads: Locate the small-gauge wires from the alternator output to the controller. Tighten any loose terminal screws and repair damaged conductors.
- Check fuses: Some Kohler controllers have internal fuses protecting sensing circuits. With power off, remove and test fuses with a meter. Replace blown fuses with identical ratings.
- Verify wiring at lugs: Ensure that the generator output lugs are wired correctly to the transfer switch and that no sensing wires were accidentally removed during service.
If wiring and fuses are intact but the controller still reports loss of sensing, the controller board may be defective and should be replaced by a qualified technician.
