Possible Causes
Aged or sulfated battery, Battery charger module failure, Loose or corroded battery terminals, Parasitic draw from accessories or controller
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn the generator OFF and open the main breaker. Wear eye protection when working around batteries.
- Visual inspection: Check the 12 V battery for bulging, cracks, or leakage. Replace if damaged.
- Clean terminals: Disconnect negative then positive cables. Clean corrosion from posts and clamps with a baking soda solution and wire brush. Reattach positive then negative and tighten securely.
- Measure voltage: With a multimeter, measure battery voltage at rest. Below ~12.4 V indicates partial discharge; below ~12.0 V indicates deep discharge or failure. Charge or replace as needed.
- Check battery charger: With AC utility power present, measure voltage at the battery terminals. It should be around 13.2–13.6 V on most Kohler chargers. If not, inspect the charger module and its AC feed fuse/breaker.
- Load test: If available, perform a battery load test. Replace the battery if it fails to maintain voltage under load.
Always use a battery with the cold cranking amps (CCA) rating specified by Kohler for your model. If the charger is not maintaining voltage, have it tested or replaced.
