Possible Causes

Low engine oil level, Faulty oil pressure switch/sender, Oil viscosity incorrect for ambient temperature, Wiring issue between oil pressure switch and controller

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn the generator to OFF, open the main line circuit breaker to the load, and disconnect the battery negative cable before working on the engine. Allow the unit to cool.

  • Check oil level: Remove the service access panel. Pull the dipstick on the Kohler engine (e.g., CH740, CH1000, KGZ series). Oil should be between the FULL and ADD marks. Top up with the Kohler-recommended oil grade (often SAE 5W-30 synthetic for air‑cooled units) if low. Do not overfill.
  • Verify oil type: If oil is very thick or sludged, or the wrong viscosity for your climate, drain and refill with fresh oil and a new Kohler oil filter.
  • Inspect for leaks: Look around the oil filter, drain plug, oil cooler (if equipped), and crankcase gasket for wet oil. Repair leaks before restarting.
  • Check oil pressure switch: Locate the oil pressure switch on the engine block. Inspect the connector and wiring harness back to the RDC/ADC controller for corrosion, loose pins, or damaged insulation. Clean and reseat connectors.
  • Test switch (advanced): With a multimeter and the engine off, verify the switch changes state with oil pressure (consult the Kohler service manual for your model). Replace the switch if it is stuck open/closed or out of spec.
  • Reset and test: Reconnect the battery, set the controller to AUTO, clear the fault, and perform a no‑load test run. Monitor for reoccurrence.

If low oil pressure persists despite correct oil level and a new switch, stop using the generator and have a Kohler-authorized technician check the oil pump and internal engine condition.
