Possible Causes

Governor misadjustment, Sticking throttle linkage, Faulty electronic governor module, Incorrect controller frequency setting

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn the generator OFF, open the main breaker, and disconnect battery negative. Do not run the generator with an overspeed condition.

  • Inspect throttle linkage: Remove the service panel and observe the governor arm and throttle linkage on the Kohler engine. Clean any dirt or corrosion and ensure the linkage moves freely through its full range.
  • Check governor spring: Verify the governor spring is correctly attached and not stretched or broken. Replace if damaged.
  • Electronic governor module: On models with an electronic governor, inspect the module and wiring harness for loose connectors or damage. Reseat connectors to the controller.
  • Controller configuration: Confirm the controller is set for the correct frequency (60 Hz in North America). Do not change advanced parameters without referencing the Kohler service manual.
  • Test run: Reconnect battery, start the generator with no load, and measure frequency with a meter. If frequency remains high and cannot be adjusted via the governor linkage, the governor module may need replacement.

Overspeed can cause severe engine and alternator damage. If you are not comfortable adjusting governor components, contact a Kohler-authorized technician.
