Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: This involves live electrical equipment. Turn generator OFF, lock out the ATS, and verify absence of voltage before opening covers. If you are not a qualified electrician, do not attempt internal ATS repairs.
- Check generator output: With the main breaker open, start the generator and verify correct voltage at the generator output lugs. If no voltage, troubleshoot generator side first.
- ATS status: Observe the ATS position indicator (UTILITY/GEN). If it remains on UTILITY during an outage, the ATS is not receiving or acting on the start/transfer signal.
- Control wiring: Inspect the low-voltage control cable between the Kohler controller and the ATS for damage or loose terminals.
- Sense fuses: Many ATS units have small fuses for utility and generator sensing. With power off, remove and test these fuses; replace if blown.
Mechanical or coil failure of the ATS contactor requires replacement of ATS components by a licensed electrician or Kohler dealer.
