Possible Causes

Overloaded generator, Sticking fuel injection pump rack, Faulty injector causing overfueling, Restricted air intake

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Isolate the generator from the load and allow the engine to cool. Diesel exhaust can be hot and contain soot.

  • Reduce load: Open the generator breaker and restart the unit with no load. If it runs cleanly, gradually add loads while monitoring smoke and kW. Do not exceed rated capacity.
  • Check air filter and intake: Remove and inspect the air filter element. Replace if dirty. Ensure the intake duct and rain hood are not blocked by debris or nests.
  • Inspect exhaust: Look for restrictions in the muffler or exhaust piping, such as crushed sections or internal collapse, which can increase backpressure and smoke.
  • Fuel system check: If black smoke persists at light load, the injection pump or injectors may be overfueling. Check for signs of fuel leakage around injector lines and nozzles. Injector and pump service should be performed by a diesel specialist.
