Possible Causes

Burned-out glow plugs, Failed glow plug relay, Blown glow plug fuse, Loose or corroded glow plug bus bar connections

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF the generator and disconnect the battery negative cable before working on the glow plug circuit.

  • Check fuse: Locate the glow plug fuse in the DC panel and test it with a multimeter. Replace if blown and investigate cause of overcurrent.
  • Inspect wiring: Follow the heavy gauge wire from the glow plug relay to the glow plug bus bar. Tighten any loose nuts and clean corrosion.
  • Test glow plugs: Disconnect the bus bar and measure resistance from each glow plug terminal to engine ground. Typical values are low (e.g., 0.5–2 ohms) but not open or short. Replace any plug with infinite resistance or a dead short.
  • Check relay operation: With battery reconnected, have an assistant initiate a preheat cycle while you listen for the relay click. Measure voltage at the bus bar; it should rise to battery voltage during preheat. Replace the relay if it does not energize.
  • Cold start test: After repairs, perform a cold start to confirm improved starting performance and that E17 is cleared.
