Possible Causes
Low coolant level (liquid-cooled models), Blocked radiator or cooling fins, Failed radiator fan or fan relay, Faulty engine temperature sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the generator, disconnect battery negative, and allow the engine to cool completely. Never open a hot radiator cap.
- Check coolant level (if liquid-cooled): Remove the radiator cap only when cool. Coolant should be near the neck. Top up with the coolant type specified by Lifan (usually premixed ethylene glycol) and inspect the overflow bottle level.
- Inspect airflow: Make sure the generator enclosure louvers and intake/exhaust vents are not blocked by debris, snow, or vegetation. Clean any dust buildup on the radiator core or cylinder cooling fins using low-pressure compressed air.
- Verify radiator fan operation: With the unit in MANUAL and running (if it will run briefly), observe whether the electric cooling fan starts when the engine warms. If not, test the fan by applying 12 V directly from the battery. If the fan runs on direct power, suspect the fan relay or controller output.
- Check temperature sensor: Locate the engine temperature sensor on the cylinder head or thermostat housing. Inspect the connector for corrosion. Use a multimeter to compare resistance to the values in the Lifan service data; replace the engine temperature sensor if readings are out of range.
- Restart and monitor: After correcting coolant level and airflow, clear the code (power cycle the controller) and run the unit under light load while monitoring temperature and fan operation.
