Possible Causes
Weak engine (fuel or compression issues), Failed AVR, Shorted stator winding, Excessive load applied at startup
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Isolate the generator from the building via the transfer switch. Turn OFF the generator and disconnect battery negative before opening panels.
- Check engine performance: Start the generator in MANUAL with no load. Listen for misfiring or bogging. If the engine cannot reach rated speed, address fuel, air filter, and spark plug issues first.
- Measure no-load voltage: With a multimeter, check AC output at the generator lugs. If voltage is low with the engine at correct speed, suspect the AVR or alternator.
- Inspect AVR and wiring: Ensure the AVR connector is secure and wires are intact. Replace the AVR if it shows signs of damage or if voltage does not respond to adjustment (if adjustable).
- Check for shorted loads: Disconnect all external loads and retest. If voltage returns to normal with no load, a downstream load may be shorted or too large for startup.
- Stator test: With the unit off, measure stator winding resistance and insulation to ground. A significantly lower resistance than spec or continuity to ground indicates a shorted stator requiring replacement.
