Possible Causes
Failed starter solenoid, Worn starter motor, Open starter relay coil, Loose battery or starter cable connections
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Ensure the generator is in OFF and cannot start automatically. Disconnect the negative battery cable before working on the starter circuit.
- Check battery and cables: Inspect the heavy positive cable from the battery to the starter solenoid on the Lifan engine. Tighten both ends and clean corrosion. Verify the ground strap from engine to frame is secure.
- Listen for solenoid click: Reconnect the battery and attempt a start while listening near the starter. A click with no crank suggests a bad starter motor; no click suggests a control or solenoid issue.
- Test starter relay: Locate the starter relay in the control box. With a multimeter, verify that the coil receives 12 V when start is commanded. If it does and the relay does not close, replace the starter relay.
- Bypass test (advanced): Briefly jump the solenoid main terminals with an insulated screwdriver to see if the starter spins (only if you are trained and safe). If it spins, the solenoid is faulty. Replace the starter solenoid or complete starter assembly.
- Re-test: After replacing faulty components, clear E12 and test automatic and manual start functions.
