Possible Causes
Failed battery charger, Parasitic DC load, Sulfated or aged battery, Loose battery connections
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the generator and open the main breaker. Wear eye protection when working with batteries.
- Step 1 – Test charger output: With AC utility present, measure voltage at the battery. It should be in the float range (around 13.2–13.8V for 12V systems). If not, check charger fuses and replace the charger if necessary.
- Step 2 – Inspect connections: Tighten battery terminals and clean corrosion. Ensure ground connections to the frame are secure.
- Step 3 – Load test battery: Use a battery tester to check capacity. Replace the battery if it fails.
- Step 4 – Check for parasitic loads: With the generator off and charger disconnected, measure DC current draw from the battery. If excessive, a control module or accessory may be drawing power and should be investigated.
