Possible Causes
Low engine oil level, Failed oil pressure switch, Damaged oil pressure wiring harness, Actual loss of oil pressure due to oil pump or bearing wear
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Place the Multiquip standby generator in OFF mode at the controller, open the main AC breaker to the building, and disconnect the negative battery cable before working near the engine. Allow the engine to cool.
- Step 1 – Verify oil level: Remove the engine dipstick and check the oil level. Top up with the manufacturer‑specified oil grade (refer to the Multiquip engine manual, typically 10W‑30 or 15W‑40 depending on model and climate). If oil is very dirty or contaminated, perform a full oil and filter change.
- Step 2 – Inspect for external leaks: Look around the oil filter, oil drain plug, valve cover gasket, and crankcase for signs of oil leakage. Tighten loose fittings to spec and replace damaged gaskets or the oil filter if leaking.
- Step 3 – Check oil pressure switch connection: Locate the oil pressure switch on the engine block (often near the oil filter). Inspect the connector for corrosion, loose fit, or broken wires. Clean contacts with electrical contact cleaner and reseat the connector firmly.
- Step 4 – Test oil pressure switch: With the battery reconnected and controller still OFF, disconnect the wire from the oil pressure switch. Using a multimeter, check continuity between the switch terminal and engine ground with engine off (most low‑oil switches are normally closed to ground). If the switch is open when it should be closed, replace it. If it is stuck closed even with oil pressure present (requires running test by a technician), it must be replaced.
- Step 5 – Clear code and test: Reconnect the oil pressure switch, reconnect the battery, and clear the E01 code from the controller menu (refer to the Multiquip controller manual). Attempt a manual start. If E01 reappears and oil level is correct, do not continue cranking—have a technician verify actual oil pressure with a mechanical gauge to rule out internal engine damage.
