Possible Causes
Low coolant level in radiator, Failed radiator fan or fan belt, Blocked radiator fins or air intake, Faulty engine coolant temperature sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn the generator OFF, open the main AC breaker, and allow the engine to cool completely (at least 30–45 minutes). Never open a hot radiator cap.
- Step 1 – Check coolant level: Once cool, remove the radiator cap slowly. Coolant should be near the top of the neck or at the FULL mark in the overflow reservoir. If low, inspect for leaks around hoses, water pump, and radiator. Top up with the correct coolant mixture recommended by Multiquip (usually a 50/50 premix).
- Step 2 – Inspect radiator and airflow: Check that the radiator fins are not clogged with dust, leaves, or debris. Clean gently with low‑pressure compressed air from the inside out, or use a soft brush. Ensure the generator enclosure louvers and intake/exhaust openings are not blocked.
- Step 3 – Verify fan operation: Inspect the radiator fan blades and fan belt (if belt‑driven). Replace a cracked or loose belt and damaged fan. On models with electric cooling fans, check the fan connector and fuse; if the fan does not run when the engine warms, the fan motor or relay may be faulty.
- Step 4 – Check coolant temperature sensor wiring: Locate the coolant temperature sensor on the cylinder head or thermostat housing. Inspect the harness for chafing or loose connections. Clean and reseat the connector.
- Step 5 – Clear code and test: After correcting issues, clear E02 on the controller and run the generator with the enclosure closed, monitoring temperature. If E02 returns quickly and coolant level and airflow are correct, the sensor or thermostat may be faulty and should be tested or replaced by a technician.
