Possible Causes
Faulty engine speed sensor (magnetic pickup), Loose or damaged speed sensor wiring, Defective governor actuator, Controller speed calibration error
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the generator, open the main breaker, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Allow moving parts to stop completely before inspection.
- Step 1 – Inspect speed sensor (magnetic pickup): Locate the engine speed sensor near the flywheel or ring gear. Check that it is securely mounted and not contacting the flywheel teeth. Clean metal shavings or debris from the sensor tip with a clean cloth.
- Step 2 – Check sensor gap: Using a feeler gauge, verify the air gap between the sensor tip and flywheel teeth is within the specification in the Multiquip service manual (commonly 0.5–1.0 mm). Adjust the sensor position if needed and tighten the locknut.
- Step 3 – Inspect wiring harness: Follow the speed sensor cable back to the controller. Look for chafed insulation, crushed sections, or loose connectors. Repair damaged wiring and reseat connectors firmly.
- Step 4 – Verify governor linkage (mechanical or electronic): On mechanical governors, ensure the linkage moves freely and is not binding. On electronic governors, inspect the actuator connector and mounting. Do not attempt internal governor adjustments without the service manual.
- Step 5 – Clear code and test: Reconnect the battery, clear E04, and perform a no‑load test run. If overspeed recurs, the governor actuator or controller speed settings may be faulty and should be checked by a qualified technician with proper test equipment.
