Possible Causes
Excessive electrical load, Fuel restriction or low fuel pressure, Faulty governor actuator, Clogged air filter
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the generator and open the main breaker. Allow the unit to cool before inspection.
- Step 1 – Reduce load: Verify that the automatic transfer switch (ATS) is not feeding more load than the generator is rated for. Temporarily disconnect large loads (HVAC, electric water heaters) and retest. Persistent underspeed under normal load indicates a mechanical issue.
- Step 2 – Check air filter: Open the enclosure and locate the air filter housing. Remove the filter and inspect for heavy dirt or oil saturation. Replace with a genuine Multiquip‑specified air filter if dirty.
- Step 3 – Inspect fuel system: Confirm fuel level is adequate. Check for kinked fuel lines, partially closed fuel valves, or a collapsed fuel hose. Replace the fuel filter if it has not been serviced recently.
- Step 4 – Governor and throttle linkage: Observe the throttle linkage while manually moving it (engine off). It should move smoothly without sticking. Lubricate pivot points lightly if corroded. Do not change governor spring settings unless following the service manual.
- Step 5 – Clear code and test: Clear E05 on the controller and run the generator with a moderate load. If the engine still bogs down and triggers E05, the governor actuator or injection system may require professional diagnosis.
