Possible Causes

Tripped main circuit breaker, Failed voltage regulator (AVR), Open stator winding, Loose alternator output connections

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF the generator and open all AC breakers. Verify with a meter that there is no voltage before touching any AC terminals. Only work on AC components if you are qualified.

  • Step 1 – Check main breaker: Inspect the generator's main output breaker. If tripped, reset it once. If it trips again immediately under no load, there may be an internal fault.
  • Step 2 – Inspect output connections: With power off, remove the alternator terminal cover. Check that all phase and neutral connections are tight and free of discoloration or burning. Tighten loose lugs to the specified torque.
  • Step 3 – Test AC voltage at alternator: Start the generator and carefully measure line‑to‑line and line‑to‑neutral voltages at the alternator terminals (use appropriate PPE). If there is no or very low voltage, the AVR or stator may be faulty.
  • Step 4 – Check AVR connections: Shut down the unit and locate the Automatic Voltage Regulator in the alternator housing or control panel. Inspect its plug and wiring harness. Look for burnt components. Reseat connectors and check any fuses in the AVR circuit.
  • Step 5 – Replace AVR if needed: If excitation voltage is missing and the stator windings test good for continuity and insulation (requires a megohmmeter), replace the AVR with a Multiquip‑approved part.
  • Step 6 – Clear code and test under load: Clear E08, restart the generator, and gradually apply load while monitoring voltage and frequency. If E08 recurs, a deeper alternator inspection by a technician is required.
